Casement or Sliding Windows? A Room-by-Room Guide for Kashmir Homes

Woodgrain uPVC casement windows in a brick-finish room

In short

Casement windows seal tighter because the sash closes onto gaskets on every side, so they suit bedrooms and rooms you heat in winter. Sliding windows save space and suit kitchens, counters and wide openings. Most Kashmir houses end up with a mix, chosen room by room.

The two windows people in Kashmir ask about most are casement and sliding. Both have a place. The trick is putting each in the right room.

How they differ

Casement: the sash is hinged at the side and swings open, like a door. When you lock the handle, it is pulled onto rubber gaskets that run all the way round the frame.

Sliding: the glass panels move sideways on tracks. Nothing swings into the room. They seal with brush strips and interlocks where the panels meet.

A sliding sash: no swing space needed, sealed with brushes and an interlock.
Casement Sliding
Seal in winter Tighter: gaskets on all four sides Good, but brush seals let more air through
Opening size The whole sash opens About half (2 track) or two thirds (3 track)
Space needed Room for the sash to swing None
Cleaning the outside Easy from inside on inward opening Harder on upper floors
Insect mesh Openable mesh sash Mesh panel on its own track (2.5 track)

Room by room

Bedrooms: casement or tilt and turn. These are the rooms you heat and sleep in through Chillai Kalan, so the tighter seal matters most.

Living rooms: large fixed glass with an opening casement. You get the view and the air.

Kitchens: sliding over the counter, where a swinging sash would be awkward, or top-hung for ventilation.

Bathrooms: top-hung with frosted glass.

Shops, corridors and wide openings: sliding.

What about tilt and turn?

A tilt-and-turn window is a casement that also tilts in at the top. It is the best of both for many bedrooms: a tight seal when closed, and a safe way to let a little air in on a cold night.

The usual answer

Most houses we fit end up with casements in the bedrooms, a big fixed-and-opening combination in the living room, a slider in the kitchen and top-hung windows in the bathrooms. See them in our gallery of finished homes.

Questions people ask

Which is warmer, casement or sliding?

Casement. When the handle locks, the sash is pressed onto gaskets on all four sides. Sliding sashes seal with brush seals and interlocks, which let a little more air through.

Are sliding windows cheaper than casement?

Often a little, size for size, but it depends on the tracks, the profile system and the glass. Compare quotes for the same specification.

Can I have mesh with a casement window?

Yes. An openable insect-mesh sash can sit with the glazed sash in one frame.
